 Of All Things Wizard Reborn...

Wow, where to begin? For those who don't know of my work, it all started way back in the early 1980s with the original writing of a fantasy-adventure screenplay and development of a role-playing game (RPG) for the Commodore 64. I wrote an accompanying novel in the early 1990s, and undertook an incredibly ambitious (if not foolish, perhaps) project from 1995-1997 to build a CD-ROM "MediaNovel" that consisted of not just text, but hundreds of individual graphic, music, audio and video clips to better tell a story via a multimedia computer. It's a long story (yes, pun intended)...

In retrospect, I always felt that the main problem with the MediaNovel was a fundamental lack of interactivity; yes, the clips were cool (well, many of them at least), but it was still a passive, one-way experience. However, building a grandiose, graphics-rich, knock-em-dead RPG is way beyond a single person's capabilities as well (especially when one already has a full-time job and does web development on the side). So, I've spent the last several years trying to combine the heart and soul of linear storytelling with the interactivity of a role-playing game--and trying to do it without requiring my own soul (in terms of time and personal resources) this time as well.

Recently, I completed an initial "episode" of what I'm now calling a "role-playing novel" (or RPN for short). Built using ASP.NET (a professional, database-driven, three-tiered online application for all those technical geeks out there), the RPN is still linear in nature, so I can continue to tell deep, enriching and complete stories. But the gaming element allows the reader/player to make genuine choices along the way, not just building a statistics-laden but meaningless character sheet but a genuine personality through body, mind and spirit. Hence, as the reader/player adventures through the many episodes to come, his choices (made through several dozen short but enjoyable scenarios encountered throughout the episode) permanently defines his hero and his adventuring party's reputation within the fantasy world.

Enough said for this opening blog entry. If you have some time and want to try something new, please create a character via the Role-Playing Novel and see what you think. The initial episode "Coming of Age" should only take 45-60 minutes to complete, and when you're finished, feel free to respond to this blog or drop me an email with your comments and suggestions!  SMH

Re: New and Improved!

Hi Scott.

I came across your game on Crane & Dragon's Top 10 List...I think it is fantastic! I had fun running through the first two modules and am eagerly anticipating the next one. Keep up the fun and know you have a fan!

Re: New and Improved!

Thank you for the wonderful feedback! When I started this project two years ago, my original intent was to develop a typical RPG, but as I did my research and looked at all the other RPGs out there, I decided to try something new, something that put more emphasis on storyline and character instead of eye candy and statistics. I appreciate your comments and I'm working hard on episode three, "Secret of the Starvix" (scheduled for the end of the month).

Re: New and Improved!

Hi Scott,

My name (or rather pen name) is WebSpoonful. I am a casual gamer and a beginner blogger. I have come across this game and is really impressed with the originality and nice game play. It was never boring and tiring, which other story-driven BBGs are. This is the first time I have come across such a game with a very nice story. It kept me wanting for more. When I started with the first Episode, I could not take my eyes and hands off my computer after that. I did not stop until I reached Episode 4. Your game novel is so addicting!

I have written an article about your game in my blog and linked it to this site (browsergamesonline.blogspot.com/2009/07/wizard-reborn-roleplaying-novel.html).

Keep up the great work and I will patiently wait for Episode 5. *thumbs up*

Sincerely,
WebSpoonful

Re: New and Improved!

Scott,

First, I really enjoyed playing my character and learning along the way. I'm now waiting with interest for the next chapter due in November 2009.

I have a request. Having leaned so much more than I knew when I started, I would like to run another character through the game. However, the only way I can see to do this would be to enter a new email address. Is there a way to run a new character with the same email address?

Re: New and Improved!

Howard,

Thanks for the feedback--I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the RPN. Yes, you can start a new character using the same email address--just be sure to use a different password. It can be a lot of fun to send a second or third character through and choose a different path than the first!

I'm a little behind with the next episode, but I hope to have it up by Thanksgiving. Again, thanks for the contact!

Comment on game play

Scott,

I've noticed a quirk in game play when using a healing potion. In theory the potion is applied to the most injured person. Can I ask that you modify this slightly so that a person who is unconscious gets a potion before someone who is merely injured. There are times when potions are limited and you really need every party member able to at least get in a strike and it's really frustrating when you drink three or four potions with one character lying unconscious and another character keeps hogging the cure. Sometimes you just need to get someone back on their feet to help finish off the enemy.

Regards,
Howard

Re: New and Improved!

Howard,

That sounds appropriate--I'll implement the change next chance I get. Thanks for the feedback!
