The following terms and legends/history are well known and understood by all intelligent creatures of Mairiga:
Age of Damnation
Thousands of years ago after humanity defeated the denwirs, tremendous amounts of unstable majika was accidentally released into the world, effects still being felt today. Upon the arrival of the guraks and their partnering with the legions from the Realm of Nightmares (a collective known as the "Corrupts"), a long and terrible war began, one that lasted nearly 1000 years. This period was known as the Age of Damnation, and very nearly saw the extinction of the human, denwir and pesserdon races. Fortunately, Sisla the Deliverer was ultimately able to defeat the Corrupts and end the Age of Damnation, destroying them all and banishing the guraks from civilization to this day.
Code of the Land
All significant cultures lay down a series of rules for its people to observe and live by; within Mairiga, this is known as the Code of the Land. Drafted by Sisla the Deliverer shortly before her death and attainment some 1200 years ago, the Code defines a series of absolute laws that all civilized beings within Mairiga must live by, such as respect for all elders, sacrifice before selfishness and a near-complete ban on anything technological. To protect and enforce the Code, Sisla also created the Inner Circle, a group of elderly wizards presumably possessing the intellect, wisdom and compassion to govern an entire world.
Great Destruction
According to legend, an evil and decadent race of gods inhabited the world thousands of years in the past. These gods believed they could do anything they wished to the land, but in the end they were all destroyed in a single cataclysmic event known today as The Great Destruction. No one knows for sure what exactly happened, but it is said that these gods were mighty through technology, and that the world punished their use of technikky with extinction. The Great Destruction is believed to have occurred some 4000 years ago, but technikky-based artifacts from that time are occasionally discovered (and promptly destroyed).
Inner Circle
After the end of the Age of Damnation, Sisla the Deliverer developed and implemented the Code of the Land, a series of absolute laws that all Mairigans were expected to accept and live by. To enforce the Code, Sisla also developed the Inner Circle, a handful of elderly wizards with the presumed intellect, wisdom and compassion to govern an entire world. Some 1200 years later, the Circle continues to control all of Mairiga, each Circle member representing a single country (some 60 or so altogether). However, dozens of countries have already fallen to darkness, and many blame the goodly but ultra-conservative Circle for the overall decline of the Sislan Utopia.
Mairiga
A world of monsters, magic and mystery, Mairiga is ruled by the goodly but extremely rigid Inner Circle, a collection of elderly wizards who supposedly possess the intellect, wisdom and compassion to govern an entire planet on their own. The healerpriests of the Sislan Church govern the population's spiritual needs, while the “Code of the Land” provides the laws and ethical conduct all Mairigans are expected to abide by. Because of how much damage the use of technology has caused in the past, the Code also prohibits nearly anything technological.
Majika
The unseen energy that gives life to all living things is known as majika, and for those capable of wielding it nearly anything is possible. While this energy is constantly all about, it can actually be gathered, focused and manipulated by the various wizards of Mairiga, those who have been “reborn” atop Mount Rebirth. Majika can also be controlled to a lesser extent by Sislan healerpriests through their lyfestones, and even by the evil Chegorians through the poison of the nemefruit. In any event, majika can only be harnessed and used by those with very strong hearts, for the process of yielding majika is an extremely painful one.
Mount Rebirth
Certainly one of the most enchanted places in all of Mairiga, Mount Rebirth is where all would-be wizards go to become “reborn” and seek their fortunes as a true wizard of Mairiga. Accessed via the Temple of Vissar, the inner crater and its “Valley of Destiny” is fraught with danger, as it is said only the most cunning and intelligent can hope to be reborn. Sisla the Deliverer was the first to be reborn atop the mountain nearly 1200 years ago; since then, thousands of wizards (both good and evil) have undergone the deadly ritual.
Nemefruit
The vile offspring of the Nemesis Plant, this disgusting fruit allows its consumers to temporarily focus and utilize majika, perhaps matching magical strength with the weaker of reborn Mairigan wizards. However, a natural poison in the fruit destroys the consumer’s ability to tell right from wrong, transforming the consumer into an evil and heartless criminal. While everyone knows about the nemefruit, some partake in the wicked drug anyway in order to wield majika and try to take what they want from the world. The “Ultimates” of Chegoria is such a group, consumers of the nemefruit who continue to plot the very destruction of the Inner Circle and all who oppose them.
Realm of Nightmares
Virtually every culture has its darkest place, another dimension or other-worldly location that spawns the demonic and represents everything evil, cold and heartless. For some this place is called Perdition’s Plane, for others it is called The Abysmal Abyss, and yet for others it is known as Hell. For Mairigans, the Realm of Nightmares is not only a wicked, hellish place but very real, and was actually opened during the Age of Damnation to allow all sorts of fiendish monsters access to Mairiga. Sisla the Deliverer eventually sealed this link somewhere deep within what is now the Evilroot Forest, and buried the portal in a place said to be the Onyx Ruins.
Revelation
Extremely rare throughout history, revelations are said to be subconscious visions of future events so cataclysmic that a select few can learn of these events even before they occur. However, many do not believe the person who experienced the revelation and often the opportunity to act is wasted. Revelations are said to occur only to those with the heart and compassion to one day change the world.
Sisla
Also known as Sisla the Deliverer and now worshipped as a goddess by the faithful of the Sislan Church, Sisla was born near the end of the Age of Damnation. Revered to this day for her incredible determination and inner strength, Sisla was the first to be reborn atop Mount Rebirth, and with her newly-acquired powers helped humanity defeat the Corrupts and end the Age of Damnation. Afterwards, she designed and implemented the Code of the Land—a set of laws established to govern a civilized way of life—and formed the Inner Circle to manage and protect the land she had so faithfully served. Many believe that Sisla became a goddess at the end of her physical life, forever protecting the world she loved so dearly.
Technikky
The Mairigan word for technology, technikky was blamed for the eradication of the gods leading to The Great Destruction, and was also heavily used by the Corrupts during the Age of Damnation. Accordingly, Sisla herself within her Code of the Land decreed that technology was the root of all evil and must be shunned whenever possible. The current Mairigan way of life therefore avoids technology almost completely. Instead, Mairigans either make do with what they have or they employ majika (magic) to ease their lives and make situations more practical. As outcasts of society, however, guraks do not share this complete and total ban on technology.
Time of Servitude
Humanity soon replaced the gods of the time before The Great Destruction, and for centuries dominated the world. But eventually the denwirs appeared; taller, stronger and fiercely proud, they eventually made war with the humans and even attempted to eradicate them. In their desperation, humanity discovered raw majika and used it to defeat the denwirs. Immediately afterwards, the entire denwir race was enslaved by humanity and forced into the Time of Servitude, which lasted 100 years. Eventually the denwirs were freed, and by the Age of Damnation the humans and denwirs were the closest of allies.
Valley of Destiny
Located within the very crater of Mount Rebirth, the Valley of Destiny is the actual place where the ritual of rebirth takes place. To reach the Valley, potential wizards must throw themselves into the volcano and trust that they will be selected for rebirth—those who are not are immediately killed!
